OUR TECHNOLOGY

A different way
for microbes to breathe.

We’re developing fermentation that relies less on a continuous supply of oxygen.

THE SCIENCE

Give microbes another
way to breathe.

Industrial fermentation usually relies on a steady supply of oxygen.

Supplying that oxygen means pushing air through the liquid and mixing it constantly. As vessels get larger, that becomes harder and more energy intensive.

Izote is developing microbes that can use a dissolved alternative to oxygen. This is different from simply asking cells to grow without oxygen. The goal is to reduce how much a process depends on air and mixing.

WHY IT MATTERS

More freedom in how
fermentation is run.

Oxygen delivery shapes the equipment, energy use, and scale-up of a process.

Reducing that constraint could allow simpler equipment, gentler mixing, and longer-running production.

WHAT THIS COULD ENABLE

Designed with manufacturing in mind.

01

Less air and mixing

Reducing the need to move large amounts of air through the liquid could lower energy use.

02

More flexible equipment

With less dependence on oxygen delivery, manufacturers may have more options in how a process is designed.

03

Longer-running processes

The platform could support production that runs continuously rather than stopping after each batch.

The platform is still under development. Results will depend on the organism, product, and process.
